Much of American culture has normalized or even celebrated laziness, calling it self-care or dismissing it as a myth. Surveys and cultural voices suggest people prefer comfort, relaxation, and excuses over responsibility, but Scripture speaks differently. Proverbs bluntly exposes laziness as a heart issue—an attitude of neglect, excuse-making, and misplaced priorities that leads to ruin. While burnout and heavy expectations are real, denying laziness altogether removes personal accountability and blinds us to the spiritual danger it brings.
God designed work as a good gift, not a burden, and calls His people to diligence. Proverbs contrasts the diligence of the ant with the excuses of the sluggard, reminding us that laziness drifts in quietly but leads to devastation. The Gospel, however, gives hope: Jesus perfectly labored, accomplished the work of our salvation, and frees us from both sloth and self-reliance. In Him, our work—whether seen or unseen—becomes worship, and our calling is to glorify Him with steady, faithful diligence.
“The Godward life is joyfully oriented toward God—shaped by His Word, empowered by His Spirit, and lived for His glory in every area of life.”
