Proclaiming the Word

David Jackman’s Proclaiming the Word: Principles and Practices for Expository Preaching from Crossway is a concise and insightful guide for both new and experienced preachers seeking to deepen their commitment to biblical, Christ-centered preaching. The book is structured in three parts.

Part One, Basic Principles, lays the theological foundation for expository preaching while offering practical guidance for sermon preparation and effectively engaging the congregation.

Part Two, Developing Skills, highlights essential tools for faithful exposition—such as understanding a passage’s context, reflecting the tone of the biblical author, and recognizing how personal theological frameworks can influence interpretation.

Part Three, Rightly Handling the Word of Truth, presents a brief yet rich reflection on the overarching storyline of Scripture. Jackman calls preachers to see the unified redemptive narrative and to trust in the transforming power of God’s Word.

Well-organized and theologically sound, Jackman’s book is an excellent introduction for Bible college students, seminarians, or those just stepping into pastoral ministry. While seasoned pastors may find much that reaffirms what they already practice, Proclaiming the Word still serves as a helpful refresher and encouragement.

As an experienced preacher, I found the book accessible, edifying, and a timely reminder of the importance of staying sharp both theologically and in the high calling of preaching. I was especially helped by the chapter titled “How Does the Preacher Persevere?”—its priorities for endurance and practical insights offer timely wisdom for anyone committed to long-term, faithful ministry.
